Summary

With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally bestselling author George R。 R。 Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros。

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone。 Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart。

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley。 Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed。

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros。

An interesting, if long, read。 The names are so similar I found it hard to keep track of characters sometimes。 I do kinda wish it had continued all the way up until the reign of the mad king though。 Would have loved to read about Maester Aemon in his youth as well。

To start let me just say that I have absolutely loved GRRM’s epic fantasy, this addition to the lore and history of Westeros and the world around the Seven Kingdoms was a pleasant read。 The history of the Targaryen Dynasty in Westeros from the Conquest to the Ascension of Aegon III provided much background and setting to a time in history when dragons ruled the sky。 A major portion of the book is devoted to the Dance of Dragons which sets about major changes to Targaryen power with the killing o To start let me just say that I have absolutely loved GRRM’s epic fantasy, this addition to the lore and history of Westeros and the world around the Seven Kingdoms was a pleasant read。 The history of the Targaryen Dynasty in Westeros from the Conquest to the Ascension of Aegon III provided much background and setting to a time in history when dragons ruled the sky。 A major portion of the book is devoted to the Dance of Dragons which sets about major changes to Targaryen power with the killing off of many of the house’s dragons。 The novel reads much better than a normal history book, but the character and vibrancy that many characters in the ASOIAF series has is missing in this story。 This causes an issue in the story where it can lull in places。 The narrator of the story makes up for this with his asides and speculations on the events that transpired。 Overall, GRRM has shown that the world of ASOIAF has a history as vibrant and ripe as that of our own。 He still needs to finish Winds, but this history tome should appease those of you looking for your fix of Dragons and Westeros in the mean time。 。。。more

I think many people weren't expecting this book to take such a realistic historical take on a fictional family, but here we are。 I loved this book。 It brought to life all of the unique Targaryens, and of course my favorite section of the text was The Dance of Dragons。 With the HBO series on the horizon, this book was a great way to spend an afternoon just immersing yourself in the historical fantasy that is A Game of Thrones。 This time with a pinch of what could be compared to a nonfiction histo I think many people weren't expecting this book to take such a realistic historical take on a fictional family, but here we are。 I loved this book。 It brought to life all of the unique Targaryens, and of course my favorite section of the text was The Dance of Dragons。 With the HBO series on the horizon, this book was a great way to spend an afternoon just immersing yourself in the historical fantasy that is A Game of Thrones。 This time with a pinch of what could be compared to a nonfiction historical timeline of a book。 Again, George R。R。 Martin displays that he not only can create one of the most prolific dark fantasy series of our time, but provide excellent supplemental material as well。 。。。more

Great insight into the history of the Targaryens。

This might be strange。。。but then I saw another review with a similar reaction。 I've stopped reading after four intense, dense days。 It's good -- it's a storybook history of what came before G of T, as opposed to a novel in its own right。 It's epic, it has pretentions akin to "Lord of the Rings" and I actually enjoyed it more than G of T in general。。。but my god, it's just TOO MUCH。 Too long, too dense。。。this should have been in volumes, but here it is in one massive work。。。and while I'm enjoying This might be strange。。。but then I saw another review with a similar reaction。 I've stopped reading after four intense, dense days。 It's good -- it's a storybook history of what came before G of T, as opposed to a novel in its own right。 It's epic, it has pretentions akin to "Lord of the Rings" and I actually enjoyed it more than G of T in general。。。but my god, it's just TOO MUCH。 Too long, too dense。。。this should have been in volumes, but here it is in one massive work。。。and while I'm enjoying it as I read it, I feel like it's a chore to constantly go back to it and wonder "when will this end"。 So after 300 plus fine print pages, I'm going to press pause and move one。 I have the general sense of 300 years ago。。。and that's enough for now。 。。。more

OK, OK, I give up。 I can't get a copy of this book from the Library and it is not engaging enough to track down a copy to read。 One day I might come back and finish but not today。 OK, OK, I give up。 I can't get a copy of this book from the Library and it is not engaging enough to track down a copy to read。 One day I might come back and finish but not today。 。。。more

With the upcoming “House of the dragon” series, I felt compelled to read this novel。 The book has some amazing illustrations and although I read it on a kindle, I would happily purchase the hardback just for display lol。 For enjoyment, I wouldn’t exactly call it an enjoyable read。 It was more like a history textbook and felt like a chore reading it。 But if you’re interested in the Targaryen dynasty this might be for you :)

Good first half of the history of House Targaryen。 Looking forward to the second half, sometime in the distant future, presumably after The Winds of Winter is finished and released。Yep 。。。 that's all I've got。 Good first half of the history of House Targaryen。 Looking forward to the second half, sometime in the distant future, presumably after The Winds of Winter is finished and released。Yep 。。。 that's all I've got。 。。。more

Fascinating read。 Reads like a history book so maybe not for everyone。 I finished it in 9 days。It was harder to follow once Dance of Dragons started as there were so many characters & often got confusing。 Let's hope he finishes the series。Graphics were a great touch。 Fascinating read。 Reads like a history book so maybe not for everyone。 I finished it in 9 days。It was harder to follow once Dance of Dragons started as there were so many characters & often got confusing。 Let's hope he finishes the series。Graphics were a great touch。 。。。more

This was an interesting book that went from listing the genealogy of the royals much like Genesis in the Bible to the story of current royalty, back to the genealogy then back to the story and so on probably 6-7 times。 Lost count as so much of it did not need to be talked about。 When it did get into the story parts it was a good read but just kept getting broken up time and again。

So I read this 2 years ago and didn’t realize I never recorded it as “read” in my goodreads。 So here I am doing that! I did love reading about the Targaryen history。 They are my favorite house in the Game Of Thrones world! Daenerys was my favorite character and of course her dragons。 I for one wasn’t a fan of the ending of Game Of Thrones…not because of the direction of her character but of the speed of the events。 Anyways…I was excited to get a book on the Targaryens and while this book is good So I read this 2 years ago and didn’t realize I never recorded it as “read” in my goodreads。 So here I am doing that! I found myself wanting more of their story! I did find it very interesting learning about the family and I am super excited about the new show which will be loosely based on this book! I recommend this book if you are a fan…I don’t think you will be disappointed。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Sweet baby Jesus, this book was SOMETHING。 I’m going to preface my review by specifying that this took me two full weeks to read, and while I’m sure that’s a normal time for most readers (because this is a behemoth of a book), it’s rare that it takes me a single week to read books even if they’re around 700 pages like this was。 The actual story itself was amazing。 Rich and detailed and so thorough that you knew what was happening in every corner of Westeros as well as some places across the Narr Sweet baby Jesus, this book was SOMETHING。 I’m going to preface my review by specifying that this took me two full weeks to read, and while I’m sure that’s a normal time for most readers (because this is a behemoth of a book), it’s rare that it takes me a single week to read books even if they’re around 700 pages like this was。 The actual story itself was amazing。 Rich and detailed and so thorough that you knew what was happening in every corner of Westeros as well as some places across the Narrow Sea。 The characters were described wonderfully, and the plot progression was slow and steady。That being said, the book was simply a bit TOO rich and detailed。 Every single battle and court meeting and high lord being constipated was recorded, which made the book so ponderous to read it’s a wonder I never gave up。It’s not that the plot was hard to understand, per say—it was just so incredibly tedious to follow along with。 Are you not good at remembering names? Don’t pick up this book。 Are you not good at remembering family feuds? Don’t pick up this book。 Do you love the Westerosi dragons and hope to see them thrive? Don’t pick up this book because, to my dismay, most of them died terrible deaths。I adore Martin’s storytelling, I do, but reading this was like a slogging through the mud, sobbing, but you promised you were gonna finish dammit。Also, in 700 pages, this somehow only covers less than half the Targaryen kings??? I was appalled when I got to the end and saw that the family line went on and on, because I thought this covered all the Targaryen’s until the Mad King from Game of Thrones。 I suppose I’m grateful it didn’t, because then it would have taken me at least a month to read…Well, on the bright side, there are lots of pictures! It’s just that some of them are gross or tragic or—ah nevermind just look at the pretty pictures。 。。。more

Fun read if you like reading pure lore。 If you go into this book expecting asoiaf level writing, that's not what you're gonna find。 If you wanna learn more about the world this isn't a bad book for that。 My only problem with this book was how dry it was written sometimes and I just lost interest after a while。 Fun read if you like reading pure lore。 If you go into this book expecting asoiaf level writing, that's not what you're gonna find。 If you wanna learn more about the world this isn't a bad book for that。 My only problem with this book was how dry it was written sometimes and I just lost interest after a while。 。。。more
